Burundi is a small country in East Africa, neighboring Lake Tanganyika in the south west, Rwanda in the north, Tanzania in the East, and Democratic Republic of Congo in the west. The capital Bujumbura was indigenously a port on Lake Tanganyika and it developed into one of the most prosperous cities in the country.
It occupies an area equal to 27,830 square kilometres (10,750 sq mi) in size, of which 25,650 square kilometres (9,900 sq mi) is land. The country has 974 kilometres (605 mi) of land border: 233 kilometres (145 mi) of which is shared with the Democratic Republic of the Congo, 290 kilometres (180 mi) with Rwanda and 451 kilometres (280 mi) with Tanzania. As a landlocked country, Burundi possesses no coastline, although it straddles the crest of the Nile-Congo River watershed.
The country became independent in 1962 after the Belgians and Germans colonialists handing it over to the natives. This country is known as the “Switzerland of Africa” for its mild and temperate climate and mountainous landscape. Burundi comprises of three tribes of people that is the Twa, Tutsi and the Hutu. The main languages spoken in Burundi are Kirundi, Swahili and French and a few speak English since it was introduced as the official language after joining the East African community in 2007.
